Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Works and Housing have paid a working visit to the Seglemi Affordable Housing Project to ascertain the cause of the recent fire outbreak at the site.

Explaining to the Committee the cause of the fire outbreak, the Project Supervisor, Mr. Yaw Obeng noted that it was a planned exercise to burn the bushy areas at the site unfortunately, the fire spread to some containers nearby.

He assured the MPs that the fire destroyed no document concerning the project. Members of the Committee were emotionally sad about the deterioration of building materials, thefts and waste of expensive tiles and doors left at the site.

The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Vincent Oppong Asamoah who doubles as the MP for Dormaa West expressed his disappointment about how the buildings have been neglected for eight years because of legal issues.

Speaking on behalf of the Ranking Member of the Committee, the Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Dr. Emmanuel Marfo, indicated that the Ghana Police Service has been assigned to provide security at the site.

However, almost everything apart from the structure of the buildings have been stolen and the Police as well as the Ministry of Works and Housing would be invited to appear before the Committee to answer questions.

He was of the view that the Presidential Transition Act must be amended to force in-coming governments to complete projects started by out-going government or efforts must be made to reach agreements during transition that state projects would be continued.

Currently the Seglemi affordable housing project is under the management of Quarm LMI Consortium which is a new developer that took over in November 2024 to complete the project.
