The leader of the Roman Catholic Church, His Holiness Pope Francis, has congratulated President Nana Akufo-Addo on his victory in the 2016 presidential election.

The message was delivered on behalf of the Pope by Archbishop Jean-Marie Speich, the Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana, when he called on the president at the Flagstaff House.

Archbishop Jean-Marie Speich told Akufo-Addo that the Pope had decided to send an envoy from the Vatican for Ghana’s 60th Independence celebration.

He said it would mark the first time in 40 years that a delegation had been sent by the Pope to witness Ghana’s Independence Day celebration.

The Archbishop said the move was proof that Pope Francis held Akufo-Addo and Ghana in high regard.

He went on to urge Akufo-Addo to quickly name Ghana's ambassador to the Vatican.

Responding, Akufo-Addo, thanked the Archbishop for his message and expressed his deep respect and appreciation for the phenomenal work being done globally by Pope Francis.
