A police officer on escort duties in a bullion van has escaped an attack by armed robbers on the Kasoa-Winneba road.

The robbers who attacked the bullion van shot at the front passenger seat, where the police officer was sitting, shattering the window in the process.

According to reports, the police escort subsequently ordered the driver to speed off while he called for reinforcement.

The Winneba Police Patrol team dispatched to Mpata Junction rushed to the scene and started a gun battle with the robbers, but they fled the scene.

All passengers in the bullion van escaped unhurt. The money in the van remained intact.

Yesterday's attack comes barely four days after a similar incident at Adedenkpo, near James Town in Accra, resulted in the death of a police officer, Constable Emmanuel Osei and a hawker, Afua Badu.

Some security analysts in the country have raised concerns about the surge in robbery cases and crime in general in Ghana.

Adam Bona who is one of these analysts has called for the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police. He explained that the enthusiasm needed to boost the morale of the service has gone down, hence, the call for a more energetic person to lead the service.

"I put the blame at the doorstep of the IGP and I'm advocating that he should go. He has reached retirement and they've given him two extensions so he should go home for more enthusiastic, energized officers who are within the 60year limit to retire to takeover and probably put a lot more enthusiasm into the Ghana Police Service."
