The Ghana Police Service is putting in place measures to prevent the incidence of mob justice in the country.

Speaking at a news briefing to update the media on investigations into the death of Captain Adams Mahama, Inspector General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu said the measure would include the enforcement of existing laws and sensitization.

He revealed “The police service…has already started putting measures in place to eradicate these acts of impunity. These measures include…, liaising with other relevant institutions to embark on massive public education, strengthening criminal investigation and taking community policing to the higher level”.

The death of Army Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama has thrown the country into a state of shock, and raised serious discussions on instant justice, often meted out to suspected thieves and armed robbers in many communities.

The soldier who was wielding a gun while jogging was mistaken for an armed robber by some residents of Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region, where he was commanding a detachment to enforce a ban on small scale mining in the country. They stoned and burnt him to death.

The IGP regretted the tragedy and called on the media to help in the education of the public against the act of instant justice.

He warned that persons found to have engaged in mob justice would face the full rigours of the law “Persons who violate the laws of the land in a manner akin to what has happened in the late captain’s case will be dealt with accordingly.

The police is prepared to collaborate with all stakeholders to ensure that this canker of “instant justice” is permanently stamped out of our society. We shall therefore stop at nothing to deal with perpetrators of this phenomenon.” Mr Asante-Apeatu said.
