The Special Envoy of the Head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis for Ghana's 60th Anniversary Celebrations on Friday, March 3, arrived in the country.

The Pope, in his congratulatory message to President Nana Akufo-Addo which was conveyed through Archbishop Jean-Marie Speich, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana last week, indicated his decision to send an envoy from The Vatican for Ghana’s 60th Independence celebration.

The Special Envoy turns out to be His Eminence Cardinal Giuseppe Bertello, the President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and of the Governorate of the Vatican City State who is virtually the Vice President of the Vatican City State.

Upon his arrival, he paid a courtesy call on Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at the Presidency where he conveyed Pope Francis’s appreciation of Ghana’s watchdog role.

Accompanied by Archbishop Jean-Marie Speich, Apostolic Nuncio to Ghana and Sir Benedict Batabe Assorow, Managing Editor of The Catholic Standard, Cardinal Bertello commended Ghana’s continued support for peace and stability through the contribution of troops to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force saying it had been noted with appreciation by the international community and the Holy Father.

On his part, Vice President Bawumia praised the Catholic Church for playing a significant role in the development of Ghana over the decades, through the provision of infrastructure and human resources.

“We value and cherish the relationship between Ghana and the Holy See and we look forward to more years of the special, mutually beneficial relationship,” Dr Bawumia said.
