Preacher jailed 5 years for vandalism at Parliament House

Christopher Kofi Okyere Sorkpa, a preacher, has been sentenced to five years in prison for damaging the windscreens of five vehicles in Parliament House car park.

Sorkpa, 33, appeared before Accra Circuit Court on Friday, where he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime and five counts of causing unlawful damage.

The court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah, sentenced him to three years for conspiracy and five years for each count of unlawful damage, with the sentences to run concurrently.

His accomplice, Wisdom Ahli, 41, was remanded until January 9, 2025, pending further investigation.

The prosecution, led by Superintendent Augustine Yirenkyi, noted that the charge against Ahli was defective and would be amended at the next hearing.

According to the prosecution, Sorkpa and Ahli, both preachers living in Kasoa, sneaked into Parliament House car park on December 18, 2024, at around 1100 hours.

Sorkpa, carrying a handbag with an earth chisel, used the tool to damage the windscreens of two Toyota Landcruiser utility vehicles with registration numbers GW 1905 –21 and GS 5055 –17 respectibvely, and two Toyota Camry saloon cars with registration numbers GB 7539 –21 and GS 9605 – 21.

He also smashed the windscreen of Toyota Rav4 with registration number GN 9605 -12.

Ahli was reportedly seen praising Sorkpa for the damage.

Both accused admitted their involvement in the crime in their caution statement to the police in the presence of an independent witness.
