FixTheCountry’s Barker-Vormawor charged with treason felony

The Ashaiman District Court has remanded Fix the country convenor Oliver Barker-Vormawor into custody after he was charged with treason felony.

The presiding judge, Justice Eleanor Barnes denied the accused bail due to the nature of the offense citing that her court does not have jurisdiction to do same.

Police blame Chief Justice for Barker-Vormawor’s over 48-hour detention

Police have parried accusations that they deliberately detained the embattled leader of FixTheCountry, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, for more than the stipulated 48 hours before dragging him to court.

According to the police officer prosecuting the charge of treason felony against Mr Barker-Vormawor, the accused spent 52 hours in detention because the Chief Justice failed to constitute a court on Saturday after had made an official request.

Police can't sustain treason felony charge against Barker-Vormawor - Lawyer

Journalist and Lawyer Sammy Darko says he does not see how the police can sustain a conviction under the charge of treason felony against Barker-Vormawor.

Sammy Darko in a Facebook post said the police service just wanted to get Barker-Vormawor remanded and change the charges later.

He further explained that "The narrow charge you may get Oliver may be abetment of treason i.e. incitement. Merely threatening is not enough to ground a charge under treason felony; "a person commits treason felony."

FixTheCountry’s Barker-Vormawor faces life imprisonment over treason felony charge

Outspoken leader of the social advocacy group FixTheCountry Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, faces life imprisonment if found guilty of the charge of treason felony.

The charge that was slapped on the young PhD student at Cambridge University's Faculty of Law is a first-degree felony, which attracts a lifetime in jail as the highest punishment -- if pronounced guilty.

Ghana Bar Association descends on Sosu for ‘political judges’ comment

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has condemned comments by Madina MP, Francis-Xavier Sosu, for allegedly referring to some members of the bench as “political judges”.

In a statement, the GBA said the alleged comment by Mr Sosu, who is also a member of the Bar, suggests that the tenure of office of judges is tied to the tenure of the political regime under which judges are appointed, and further that “political judges will be treated politically”.

Cocoa production in Ghana and Ivory Coast dropped in 2021

Cocoa production in Ghana and Ivory Coast for the year ending 2021 is said to have significantly dropped, according to figures from the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO).

The International Cocoa Organization has said in a statement that purchases and arrivals of cocoa beans from the two top producers of the commodity went down.

While Ivory Coast recorded a drop of 4%, Ghana instead recorded a staggering 54%, something that surprises the ICCO.

Gov't spending so much money on E-Levy Town Hall meetings-  STRANEK

Fuel prices to go up again – COPEC predicts 

 The Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC) is forecasting fuel prices could go up by up to 30pesewas soon.

Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers Ghana (COPEC), Duncan Amoah stated that “From 16th Feb 2022, at FOB price of $880.79, our projected Ex-pump price is GHS7.764, so it’s expected that the max Ex-pump price shall be hovering around GHS7.750”.

An online petition to save the once-iconic and vibrant Efua Sutherland Children’s Park from decay has started in earnest.

The petition on Change.org is being championed by Mmofra Foundation, founded by the celebrated Ghanaian writer and playwright, Efua Sutherland after who the park is named.

Troops near Ukraine border 'nothing special' - Russian official

Vyacheslav Nikonov, from the Russian State Duma committee on international affairs, tells the BBC there is "nothing special" about Russian military exercises near Ukraine.

Asked about Moscow's large military build-up, Nikonov says information about Russian troops gathering on the border is "from Western sources so you must know better".

He insists: "Russian exercises are standard, regular, and there is nothing special about it."
