Pupils and teachers of Korpehem D/A Basic School at Ada in the Greater Accra region are heaving a sigh of relief, following the replacement of the roof on a school block.
Primenewsghana.com reported in February, that pupils were compelled to study under trees after the roofing of the block was ripped off by a rainstorm, destroying administrative record books, textbooks and library books.
Following the report and calls by school authorities, the Member of Parliament of the area, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe-Ghansah funded the roofing of the school block and pupils have since gone back to their classrooms.
In an interview with Primenewsghana.com, the MP said, she felt the need to assist the school because the incident was affecting education in the area.
She added that, "it was necessary to assist since a District Chief Executive(DCE) is yet to be appointed for the area following the rejection of the President's appointee by Assembly." Works on the building she said was completed last week and activities in the school has returned to normal.
Headmaster of the school, Divine McCarthy said, they are excited that, pupils are now comfortably  studying in their classrooms.Teaching has improved marginally as pupils are now very punctual and happy to be in school.Â
"I am really excited for the Kindergarten pupils especially who prior to the MP's intervention were taught in an open dusty compound with insufficient shade.".He also expressed appreciation to the MP who doubles as the second Minority Chief Whip in Parliament for her intervention adding, that it would go a long way to raising future leaders for the area and the country at large.
According to Mr. McCarthy, though the roofing has been fixed, other parts of the structure affected by the rainstorm would also require urgent renovation.
"The ceiling in some of the offices need to be fixed, cracks on the building which would require cement works and some windows that were ripped off by the rainstorm needs to be replaced, “he stated. He is therefore calling for support from government and corporate Ghana to refurbish the entire school building.
One of the teachers at the school, Paul Gidiglah added that, they hope other aspects would be completed to totally ease pressure on them.
“We are making good use of the current renovation as we look forward to the rest to the done to ensure total safety and security at school,â€he stated.
A form One pupil of the school, Raymond Sronani said “everything is now going on well and our teachers are always available to teach us.â€
He added that, they are able to learn even when it is raining unlike previous days that they were forced to close when the rain sets in.“We now close at the normal time whether it rains or not which was not the case when the roofing was off. We normally close or refuse to come to school when we see signs of the rains,†the 13-year-old, stressed.
On behalf of all the students he expressed appreciation to the MP for coming to their aid and ensuring effective academic activities at the school.
