Former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Professor Stephen Adei has proposed that in order to improve the quality of education in the country, all basic school teachers must be sacked and reemployed after they have gone through proper screening.

Speaking in a radio interview, Wednesday, Prof Adei said the education system has become corrupted with unqualified teachers who are causing academic backwardness and a resulting poor performance of students who pass through the system.

"We should sack all the teachers in the basic schools once, pay them off and then ask people to reapply as headteachers. When they qualify to become headteachers, they will be paid well, at least 50% above teachers and also be given the authority to recruit new teachers. The headteachers who don't deliver results will lose their jobs. The education system will be back on track, although this measure is to the extreme.", he explained.

Prof Adei admitted that his proposal was somewhat extreme but necessary if an immediate change is needed. He said that the quality of education is likely to improve within a few months if the clean-up is implemented. He added that parents must be more concerned and "angry enough because if measures are not taken, we are all in trouble".

He expressed disappointment at the situation where some school children abandoned classes to wave at the Ivorian President during his visit saying, "Incidents such as the public school students leaving class to wave Ouattara must be discouraged, as children of these public officials attend private schools which were engaged in studies while public school students were asked to go and stand in the sun and wave flags during school hours".

He, however, commended the meeting between President Akufo- Addo and President Ouattara as a good example of statesmanship, despite the ITLOS case.
