The Sales and Marketing Manager of DPS Industries Limited, Depak Sonar, has been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly investing the company’s GH¢491,000 in casino and online sports betting.
Court documents reveal that Sonar, who is accused of dishonestly appropriating GH¢681,000 from the company, used GH¢491,000 of the funds for betting purposes while using the remaining GH¢190,000 to settle personal debts.
Sonar pleaded not guilty to the charge of stealing when he appeared before the court, presided over by Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, on Tuesday.
Defense counsel Osman Muhaideen requested bail for his client, and the court subsequently granted Sonar bail in the sum of GH¢700,000, with three sureties (to be justified) who must each earn no less than GH¢5,000. Additionally, all sureties must be public servants residing within the jurisdiction.
Sonar has also been ordered to deposit his passport at the court’s registry and report to the police every two weeks.
The case has been adjourned to April 23, 2025, pending the advice of the Attorney-General.
Prosecution’s Facts
According to the prosecution, Sonar was employed by DPS Industries Limited as the sales/marketing executive in January 2024. His responsibilities included supplying the company’s products to customers and reporting the sales proceeds to the company.
It wasn’t until recently that discrepancies began to appear in his account submissions. On January 10, 2025, the company invited Sonar to account for the products he had supplied. Upon auditing, it was discovered that Sonar had misappropriated GH¢681,000 of the company’s sales proceeds.
On January 11, 2025, the matter was reported to the police, and Sonar was arrested. During investigations, Sonar admitted to the offence in his caution statement and requested time to refund the amount involved.
Further investigation revealed that Sonar had used GH¢190,000 of the misappropriated funds to settle personal debts, while he invested GH¢491,000 in casino and online sports betting.
