The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, has disclosed that Shine Feel, a Chinese toiletries manufacturing  factory at Asutuare in the Shai Osudoku District of the Greater Accra Region will be sanctioned if investigations by the Agency reveals that they are recycling plastics instead of paper.

Head of Public Affairs at EPA, Angelina Mensah said a team from the agency has been sent to the area to ascertain the extent of pollution which has forced authorities of Osudoku Senior High Technical School to shut down the educational facility.

According to her, although the operators of the factory were given the permit to recycle paper, they have received information which suggests otherwise.

She said sanctions will apply if, after investigations, it is found that “they are doing something outside of what they were given a permit to do. Certain sanctions will apply.”

Shai Osudoku: Authorities shut down SHS

The over 1,200 students of the school were last week sent home, a decision management took to protect them from the health hazard.

According to the headmistress of the school, Sylvia Baaba Yankey, the decision was taken because they can no longer endure the harmful smoke emitted by the factory.

She lamented that the pollution from the company has worsened such that they had no option than to send the students home.

“The students agitated that because of the smoke they could not stay. The boy’s dormitory and the classroom block are close to the factory. Since Tuesday the stench and the smoke which for some time now has subsided erupted again. Ghana Education Service is very much aware of the situation,” she added

Shai Osudoku: MP not aware of the existence of Chinese company

The MP for Shai Osudoku in a radio interview with Accra based JoyFM said she is unaware of the existence of the Chinese manufacturing company accused of severe air pollution which has led to the closure of a Senior High School in the area.

“I wasn’t in the know, I wasn’t aware, I got the news only last week Friday on my tour of some communities in the constituency.”

She explained that attempts to meet the headmistress of the Senior High school and the District Chief Executive to discuss the severe smoke problem have been futile.
