A bystander was struck by a stray bullet during a shooting incident at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

According to a statement released by the GRA’s Communication & Public Affairs Department, officers of the Customs Division stationed at the Sogakope checkpoint received intelligence about a suspected uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan being smuggled from Togo into Ghana.

In an attempt to apprehend the vehicle and its occupants, the individuals abandoned the vehicle and fled.

The Customs officers then fired warning shots.

“Unfortunately, a bystander was reported to have been struck by a stray bullet a few meters from the checkpoint. The injured person was immediately rushed to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital for medical attention and is currently responding to treatment,” the statement said.

The GRA has assured the public that the incident is being thoroughly investigated and that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety and well-being of those affected.
