The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has dragged businessman, Ibrahim Mahama to court, over the non-payment of SSNIT contributions of the staff of one of his companies, Engineers and Planners (E&P).
In a case heard at the Special SSNIT Court on Saturday,The Trust's representative, Leena Adomah Boakye explained that E&P, Mr Mahama and other Directors of the company had failed to pay the contributions of their workers from February 2015 to July 2015 and June 2016 to October 2016.
The unpaid contributions amounting to GHC700, 000 has however shot up to over GHC 1,000,000 as a result of a GHC400, 000 penalty.
The Executive Director of E&P, Suleiman Ahmed Aminu, who appeared in court pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Lawyers for the accused persons pleaded with the court to pardon the absence of their clients and prayed for an adjournment. The Magistrate, Afua Gyakyiwaa granted the request and adjourned the case to May 13, 2017, with an order to the defence lawyers to ensure that their clients show up in court for their pleas to be taken.
This is the second time in about two weeks that Mr Mahama and his companies have been in the news for the wrong reasons.
The younger brother of former President John Mahama was last week ordered by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to pay an amount of GHC 10,000,000, being the duties on earth moving machines he imported into the country. He is also to pay an additional GHC 2,000,000 as interest on the amount.
Ibrahim Mahama issued 44 dud cheques to the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to cover the duties in 2015.
