Students of the University of Education Winneba, UEW, are stranded on campus after the Regional Security Council, REGSEC and MP for the area Afenyo Markin issue counter directives on Thursday, March 14.

REGSEC on Thursday asked students to go home because the school has been shut down indefinitely after students demonstrate the sacking of some lecturers of the school by the Vice Chancellor Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni.

The three days demonstration led to a clash between the police and the students leaving five persons injured. The Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan announced the closure of the school.

According to him, REGSEC cannot sit and assume things will go back to normal, therefore, the closure of the school.

"This university for the last three-four days, there have been demonstrations and the Regional Security Council can not sit and say things will normalise, I must first commend the police."

But the MP for the area also on a local radio station and on Facebook asked the students to remain on campus because REGSEC has agreed to reopen the school.

"I am happy to inform all students that Regsec has ordered the immediate reopening of the university. All UEW students are free to remain in the various halls of residence. The police have been duly informed hence no student will be prevented from entering the campus. I urge all students to be law abiding."

According to some students who spoke to the media, they do not know which of the directives to comply with. Some also attributed their stay on campus after the directive to lack of funds to go home.

REGSEC is expected to brief the media on the labour impasse on campus today.
