Prediction of a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the country looms as the latest update by the Ghana Health Service (GHS) shows active cases now stands at 2,247.
The number of deaths has also increased to 801 from 799 at the previous update on July 6, 2021.
In the latest update for July 8, 2021, Greater Accra Region leads with the highest cumulative cases of 53,553.
Three weeks ago, a Virologist at the Kumasi Centre for Collaborative Research said a pre-screening exercise for a study showed rising COVID-19 infection rates in one of two regions with high active cases.
Dr John Amoasi said the results from the pre-screening exercise in the Ashanti Region, which currently has the second-highest COVID-19 infections and active cases, hints at an overall national scenario.
He said the data pointed to a third wave of the virus in Ghana.
Vaccine acquisition challenges have stalled a national vaccination programme.
There are fears that a third wave of the virus would undo the gains made in fighting the virus and further decimate the economy if another lockdown is imposed.
Below is the data provided by the GHS about the virus situation as of July 8, 2021.
