Affected flood victims of the Upper East region have lamented over the sought of relief items distributed to them following the recent torrential rains.

According to them, they need food items and not mattress and mosquito coils being given to them by the National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO.

Flood in the region has killed at least 28 people leaving homes destroyed and people displaced. Some 26,083 people, 10,890 of them children, have been rendered homeless following the continuous rainfall in the region.

The NADMO started the distribution of relief items yesterday October 21 2019.

Speaking to Radio Ghana today, October 21 2019, some victims stated what they expect from NADMO to make life comfortable after the torrential rains.

''We need food items to survive not mosquito nets and coils. Our children need food to survive''.

''Though we need mattresses and other items the most pressing one is food. Most of our farm produce got submerged and destroyed by the floods because the time the rains came, produce was ready for harvesting so when it kept long in the water all got destroyed, another said.

Another indicated that : "Food is all we need now, we are starving, we need food to survive''.

The Upper East region experienced torrential rains between October 1 and October 11, this year, leading to flooding, the collapse of buildings and structures, deaths, destruction of properties and displacements.

Meanwhile, the Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, yesterday toured parts of the region to assess the situation, commiserate with bereaved families and empathise with those who lost their properties, stored food items and farms to the torrential rains.

His first point of call was Mayoro, a community in the Kassena Nankana Municipality after he had been briefed in Navrongo.
