The University of Ghana has suspended Dr. Sampson Obed Appiah, a senior lecturer in the Sociology Department, for two semesters due to allegations of sexual harassment.

This disciplinary action follows an internal investigation into the lecturer’s conduct, which was found to violate the institution’s Sexual Harassment and Misconduct Policy as well as the Code of Conduct for Academic Staff.

The decision, outlined in a notice signed by the university’s registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, was made public on March 12, 2025.

Along with Dr. Appiah, 16 students from the university were also disciplined for various forms of misconduct, further demonstrating the university’s commitment to upholding high standards of behaviour within its community.

Dr. Appiah’s suspension includes several specific penalties. He is required to issue a formal written apology to the complainant and is prohibited from applying for any promotions within the institution for one year after his suspension.

Additionally, he will undergo training on sexual harassment and misconduct, provided by the university’s anti-sexual harassment committee, as part of efforts to prevent future violations.

The university also took the opportunity to remind all students, staff, and faculty members of their responsibility to adhere to the institution’s policies and codes of conduct.

The administration has encouraged everyone in the university community to familiarise themselves with the regulations and act in ways that reflect the university’s values.
