The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has suspended its generally ineffective strike less than 24 hours following the intervention of Vice Chancellors Ghana (VCG).
The strike was in protest against a court verdict which asked the Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), to step aside momentarily.
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of UTAG, asked the UTAG-UEW to continue with their strike started in July 2017, and urged all lecturers in public Universities throughout the country to withdraw their teaching services beginning Monday, September 18.
Nonetheless, after a meeting with Vice Chancellors Ghana (VCG), UTAG in a statement disclosed that the suspension of the strike was to allow the VCG a period to intervene in the matter.

The statement signed by the National Secretary of UTAG, Samuel N. Nkumbaan however cautioned that in the case the VCG attempt fails to resolve the matter, UTAG will have no option than resume its industrial action in full force.
Speaking to Primenewsghana on condition of anonymity on Monday, a lecturer at the Ghana Institute of Journalism, said the strike called by UTAG is rather unnecessary because certain procedures were not followed.
He explained that the local UTAG body at UEW is divided as some are in support of the court ruling while others are against it, therefore the problem must be dealt with at the local level before assuming national proportions.
