The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that all withheld results of candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will be released by February 28, 2025.
The Council announced this in a statement released on Friday, February 7, 2025, to offer an update on investigations into allegations of test malpractice reported during the 2024 WASSCE for School Candidates.
“Meanwhile, the Council has continued its hearings for other affected candidates and has been releasing results as appropriate. We wish to assure our stakeholders that all cases of malpractice being investigated will be finalized, and all results released by February 28, 2025,” the statement reads in part.
WAEC stated that it first withheld the results of 319 schools and 990 individual students due to suspected examination malpractices.
The examination body identified anomalies such as bringing foreign materials into test halls, possessing mobile phones, sharing photocopied answers, and cooperation.
“Some of these malpractice cases were of a criminal nature and were referred to the police for appropriate action, while others were handled internally for appropriate sanctions to be applied,” the statement further noted.
The Council said that, among other things, it had cancelled the subject results of 4,108 applicants for bringing illegal materials into the testing rooms and annulled the entire results of 483 applicants for using cell phones while taking tests.
Candidates whose results were withheld were given a fair hearing, according to WAEC.
“The affected candidates were invited to meet WAEC officials, accompanied by their parents or guardians, to respond to the allegations,” the Council noted, adding that the candidates were not coerced into writing statements.
