The National Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Kwame Kuma has described the 15 percent increment in transport fares as a "good deal" which Ghanaians must take in good faith.

According to him, they had wanted an increment between 20 and 25 percent but had to accept the 15 percent upon serious considerations.

The GPRTU and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) on Monday, April 3, announced the increment through a joint statement.

The increment which affects Intracity (Trotro), Intercity (Long Distance) and Taxi Cabs, the statement said, is to take effect on Thursday, April 6.

This has caused some public outcry as some are questioning why transport fares should be increased at a time fuel prices had been cut down.

But speaking on Starr FM's morning show on Tuesday, the GPRTU National Chairman explained that they took into account a lot of factors before the arrived at the decision.

"It is not only fuel that is needed to run a vehicle. There are many things to buy to get a vehicle running", he explained.

He thus asked for patience from Ghanaians adding with the increment, they were going to serve commuters better.

"Ghanaians should be extra patient and agree with us. It's a good deal and now that we are taking 15 percent transport increase, we will ensure your safety on your road as well".

"I will take your 15% and pray for you so you are safe in my trotro. If you want toffees and biscuits, we can buy it and share for all passengers", he added.
