A fire that broke out on Good Friday night has claimed the life of a young woman and destroyed more than 150 structures near the Redco flats at Madina in Accra.

The blaze, which started around 11:15 p.m., tore through a cluster of wooden and metal structures serving as homes and commercial outlets.

Firefighters from the Madina Fire Station were the first to respond, arriving just two minutes after the alarm was raised.

Reinforcements from Adenta, Legon, Abelemkpe, and the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Headquarters later joined efforts to bring the fire under control.

According to the GNFS, the fire was already at a fully developed stage when personnel arrived. It was successfully confined by 12:02 a.m. and fully extinguished at 2:22 a.m.

A Nigerian national identified only as Beauty, believed to be in her early twenties, was killed after she became trapped inside one of the burning structures.

Her charred remains have been handed over to the Madina Police for preservation and further investigation.

In all, over 150 wooden and 20 metal structures were destroyed. However, firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to more than 200 nearby structures, including the Redco flats.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
