Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, James Agalga, has asked the President to allow the newly sworn-in Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to work freely without interference.

He said if President Nana Akufo-Addo makes such a vow to the IGP and his team, he is sure that the IGP will raise the level of policing the country to the next level.

“I think that the president himself must commit not to interfere in the work of Dr Akuffo Dampare so that regardless of whoever you are notwithstanding your political colour, you will be dealt with should you fall foul of the law regardless of your status. So, if the president will make that commitment and also ensure that the IGP is well resourced to execute his mandate, I am hopeful that policing in this country can be taken to the next level,” James Agalga said.

The Ranking Member on the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament said the choice of Dampare as the new IGP will be fruitless if he is not well resourced and given enough room to operate.

He also told Citi News that the newly sworn-in Inspector General of Police must be bold to take on anyone who breaks the law, regardless of his or her status and personality.

Dr George Akuffo Dampare was sworn in as the substantive IGP of the Ghana Police Service on Friday, October 8, 2021 by Nana Akufo-Addo after acting in the position for two months.

Dr Dampare gained the admiration of many Ghanaian people in the period when he was appointed as the acting IGP by President Nana Akuffo Addo.
