Alban Bagbin has been sworn-in as Speaker of Parliament of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana.
The Chief Justice, Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo conducted the swearing-in, taking Bagbin through the required oaths.
Also elected are Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor, as 1st Deputy Speaker and the Member of Parliament for Fomena, Andrew Amoako Asiamah, as the 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament, a position he has held since January 2021.
The Majority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, officially nominated Bagbin for the Speaker position, highlighting his distinguished career and transformative leadership.
In accordance with Parliamentary Standing Orders 72 and 84, Mr. Bagbin’s nomination was submitted with written consent and supported by a member’s motion.
Dr Forson praised Mr. Bagbin’s extensive expertise as a lawyer, politician, and statesman, emphasizing his significant role in reshaping parliamentary governance.
The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, seconded Mr Bagbin’s nomination, emphasizing the Speaker’s unmatched experience and leadership credentials.
After a brief discussion, the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Djietro, declared, “With no other nominations for the position of Speaker, I hereby declare Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament.”
In his acceptance speech, Bagbin called for unity and pledged to work impartially to ensure the smooth functioning of the House.
Bagbin has been in Parliament since the advent of the 4th Republic and has served virtually in all positions available in the House.
Profile of Alban Bagbin
1. The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Bagbin attended the Sombo R. C. Primary and the Wa Secondary Schools in the Upper West Region and proceeded to the Tamale Secondary School in the Northern Region where he obtained his Advanced Level Certificate in 1977.
2. He gained admission to the University of Ghana School of Law and graduated in 1980 with a Degree in Law and English. He enrolled at the Ghana Law School and was subsequently called to the Bar in 1982.
