Member of Parliament for Buem, Kofi Adams, has threatened to drag the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, to Parliament over delay in the creation of Guan Constituency.

He feels the Electoral Commission has delayed in making sure that the people in the Guan District are represented in Parliament and if the situation persists, he will have no option but to drag the EC to Parliament.

“This continuous delay by the EC is unfair to the people of Guan district, it is putting pressure on me as a member of Parliament for Buem who have to attend to some needs in that area. I love to engage and love to do some behind the scenes activities, I will continue to do that but if I get the indication that they don’t want to do the needful then I would have to find other means of bringing them to parliament to answer why for the continuous delay,” he said.

Speaking to Joy News, Kofi Adams said this is something that the Electoral Commission should have done quickly since the commission wrote a letter to the people indicating that the area that forms the Guan district will not take part in the Parliamentary elections on December 7, 2020.

"From then till now, they [EC] should have taken the necessary steps to bring a C.I. before this Parliament to create a constituency," he said.

Some residents in the Guan District have also petitioned the Electoral Commission over their lack of representation in Parliament but they are yet to receive a response.

The Guan District was created recently in the Oti Region, following a Legislative Instrument that was laid in Parliament by the Ministry of Local Government.

The areas that constitute the Guan District include the Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe and Lolobi traditional areas.
