General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Atik Mohammed has refuted media reports that he has been suspended from the party.
PNC Communications Director Emmanuel Wilson confirmed that the decision was taken at the party's extraordinary National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held Saturday, July 22, 2017.
At the meeting, Mr Mohammed was accused of bringing the image of the party into disrepute. His accusers cited his repeated criticisms of the 2016 Presidential Candidate Dr Edward Mahama at NEC meetings.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo earlier this month appointed 2016 flag bearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Dr. Edward Nasigre Mahama, as an Ambassador-at-Large.
An ambassador-at-large is a diplomat of the highest rank or a minister who is accredited to represent t the e country internationally.
Atik Mohammed amongst other executives had called for the resignation of Dr. Mahama from the party as he had shown ‘bad judgment’ in accepting the position.
He is quoted as having said that the party could “not even be sure where [Dr. Mahama’s] loyalty is anymore. . . He cannot continue, in my opinion, to be the leader of the party.â€
However, in a rebuttal he said, no organ in the party possesses such authority to suspend him.
“My attention has been drawn to some news that I have been suspended indefinitely. It is not true and, indeed, no organ of the party saves National Congress is clothed with such powers.â€
On his Facebook page, he added that in no time he will submit to the media a statement that will clarify the current happenings in the PNC party.
