Daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings has emerged  the Member of Parliament-elect for the Korle Klottey constituency in the Greater Accra region.

According to provisional results, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings polled 5070 votes as against her closest contenders Lawyer Philip Addison and Valentino Nii Noi Nortey who polled 3694 and 1379 votes respectively.

The win, though a significant morale booster for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), could be described as a loss to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) rather than a victory for the NDC.

Considering the vote count for the NPP's Addison and Nii Nortey who left the NPP to contest as independent due to what he termed as ill-treatment from the party's hierarchy, their combined votes of 5073 would have won the seat for the NPP by three votes.

Nii Nortey, a former constituency chairman of the party won an initial parliamentary primary organised in August 2015 but his main opponent, Philip Addison managed to get the results annulled by an Accra High Court.

A second primary had Mr Addison, who was the NPP's lead counsel in the 2013 Election Petition winning with 396 votes against Nii Nortey's 367 votes and he, feeling mistreated decided to contest as an independent candidate to some devastating effect for the NPP.

Though Dr Rawlings who beat incumbent Member of Parliament for the constituency, Nii Armah Ashitey in her party's primaries, had her candidacy disputed in court, the party was able to convince Mr Ashitey to stop plans of going independent.

This move by the NDC upon hindsight has proven to be the key to the results as it happened.

Dr Zanetor Rawlings may have won the election by some margin, but the NDC should not be thumping their chests for any job well done as it was the inability of the NPP to rope in Nii Nortey that gave them the seat.

Indeed, if the NPP had got Nii Nortey to support Mr Addison, they would have wrestled the seat from the NDC.
