Cadman Mills, the older brother of the late President John Atta Mills, has said that Atta Mills was hurt by repeated verbal attacks from former President Jerry Rawlings during his tenure of office.
Atta Mills was vice-president to Rawlings from 1996 to 2000, but the two fell out when the former was elected president in 2008.
Speaking in an interview with Bola Ray on Starr 103.5 FM, Cadman Mills said the incessant personal attacks from Rawlings affected the late president badly.
“[Late President] Mills got very hurt at a point when ex-president Rawlings was being cruel... Some of the things that ex-President Rawlings said were a bit cruel,†he said.
Cadman Mills also portrayed Atta Mills as a very lonely man who was maltreated by his handlers.
He said, for instance, that Atta Mills quarters at the Osu Castle was not fitting for a human to live in and that the roof of the building leaked.
“...he was a very lonely man…extremely lonely man…Oh! My God I would go to his quarters in the Castle which were not really basically fit for human being to live in. I mean my God and he will be sitting in this chair very quietly,†he said.
Candman Mills accused the handlers of his brother during his sick periods of betraying him by hiding his ailment for political expediency.
He said they were insensitive towards his brother whose health deteriorated at a point and had to be taken for proper treatment in the USA and South Africa.
He said at one point, he angrily insist that his brother be taken abroad for treatment.
“I told them my piece of mind and I decided we had to go to the USA. What really got me furious was that they said he was going to the U.S for a routine medical checkup and I said what are you people talking about. My brother is a human being, he’s not well.
"I wanted him to take the time necessary to get well. The fact of your being a president doesn’t mean you don’t get sick and what is political about getting sick but you see the narrative had been developed for a long time that he was a very sick man, he was on the verge of death at any given time, all of these were not true,†he said.
