The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to install 50,000 CCTV cameras across major towns in Ghana to enhance security and combat crime.
He made this commitment while campaigning in the Dome-Kwabenya constituency, referencing a study by security agencies that identified the need for 50,000 CCTV cameras to adequately cover all roads in regional and district capitals.
Bawumia noted that although the government has started installing CCTV cameras, many streets remain without coverage.
He also highlighted the importance of implementing a “Buy Ghana First” policy to boost local job creation, emphasizing that increasing the consumption of locally produced goods would lead to business growth and more employment opportunities.
During his campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia engaged with clergy, imams, and chiefs in the Ashongman Estate area. Former Speaker of Parliament Mike Ocquaye praised Dr. Bawumia, commending his intellectual capabilities and his significant contributions to the party.
“When there were controversies about election matters and we had gathered a lot of information, Frank Davis and others toiled, but how to put the things together in an acceptable formula for court—that work was done by Dr. Bawumia,” Ocquaye stated, referring to him as “Mr. Pink Sheet,” a nickname earned during election petition hearings.
Dr. Bawumia reiterated the achievements of the NPP government and underscored the necessity for enhanced security measures, including the installation of CCTV cameras.
“I called national security, and I asked what it would take to have CCTV on all the streets in our regional and district capitals, so we can monitor any crime and at least have a clue,” he explained.
“They told me 50,000 CCTV cameras would be needed, and we are going to provide them so that the police can have visibility for every movement because we don’t have many police officers.”
