Spokesperson for New Force, a political movement, Shalimar Abbiusi has been granted bail in the sum of GHc20,000 with two sureties by the Kaneshie District Court.

In addition to the bail sum, the court said she should report to the Immigration Officers three times every week and the prosecution should hold on to her passport until final determination of the case.

The Court also said, the places of abode of the sureties should be known to the Prosecution.

This was after the 30-year-old Belgian national, Shalimar Abbiusi pleaded not guilty to one count of “obtaining for yourself a student permit by false declaration contrary to section 52 (1) (i) of the Immigration Act 2000 {Act 573).”

Background

Shalimar Abbiusi was detained by the National Investigation Bureau when she was invited as part of the Bureau’s steps to identify the persons behind the movement’s formation.

According to the movement, Ms Abbiusi was summoned for a discussion on Monday, December 4, 2023 and "never released thereafter".

The Belgian national was accused of violating section 52 (1) (i) of the Immigration Act 2000 (Act 573), specifically "Obtaining for Yourself a Student Permit by False Declaration."

The New Force in a statement on Thursday, December 7, expressed deep concern about the arrest of Ms. Abbiusi adding that it is a violation of her human rights.

Regarding her resident permit, the group said it was facilitated and issued to her over three years ago by the Ghana Immigration Service but the authorities are now claiming that one of the documents she submitted could not be verified and demand that she be held in custody pending investigations.

They further called on the international community to monitor these “developments, emphasizing the need for a swift and just resolution.”
