The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to deliver its version of the State of the Nation Address, dubbed the “True State of the Nation Address,” on March 4, 2025.

This move comes on the heels of President John Mahama’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, 2025, which the NPP claims “selectively omitted critical national issues and misrepresented the realities of Ghana’s current state”.

According to the NPP, President Mahama’s address failed to provide a comprehensive update on the nation’s trajectory since assuming office on January 7, 2025.

The party cited several pressing national issues that were conspicuously absent from the President’s address, including:

  • Deteriorating Power Supply: Worsening electricity instability threatening businesses and livelihoods.
  • Security Challenges: Decline in national security, particularly in the northern regions, heightening concerns over public safety.
  • Rising Illegal Mining (Galamsey) and Violence: Resurgence of illegal mining, accompanied by violent incidents in Obuasi, posing severe environmental and security risks.
  • Employment Crisis: Mass cancellation of public sector recruitments and appointments exacerbating unemployment and deepening economic uncertainty.

“The State of the Nation Address is a constitutional mandate under Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, intended to provide an honest and comprehensive update on the state of affairs,” the NPP stated.

“Unfortunately, the address delivered by the President fell short of this obligation”.

The NPP’s True State of the Nation Address will be presented by the party’s leadership in Parliament, led by Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin.

The event aims to offer Ghanaians a factual and objective account of the nation’s condition, ensuring transparency, accountability, and responsible governance.
