John Dumelo, the Parliamentary Candidate of the main National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ayawaso West Wuogon, has officially filed a complaint with the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) against the incumbent Member of Parliament, Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

Dumelo has accused the MP of vote-buying following her gesture of providing food to voters during the December 2 special voting exercise.

In a viral video, Lydia Alhassan, dressed in a white shirt, blue cap, and blue jeans, is seen with the NPP’s constituency women’s organiser distributing packs of food in white disposable bags to prison officers queuing to cast their votes at the Legon Police Station.

However, the MP has defended her actions, claiming they were done with a “good heart” and lacked any malicious intent. She stated that the voters had requested the food, which was originally intended for her agents.

"Someone in the queue asked for a package, and my women’s organiser, out of goodwill, gave one. That led to a few others being given," she explained in a radio interview with Citi FM on Tuesday. "It was not intentional, and I did not distribute anything myself."

In a post on Tuesday, December 3, John Dumelo wrote, “This afternoon  [December 3] at about 1:00 pm, my team filed a formal criminal complaint against MS. LYDIA SEYRAM ALHASSAN (the sitting MP for our beloved Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency) at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

“The complaint entails video recordings of various conducts by MS. LYDIA SEYRAM ALHASSAN which we believe breach our criminal and electoral laws. My team also gave material information on plots by MS. LYDIA SEYRAM ALHASSAN to unlawfully influence voters on a larger scale come Saturday, December 7, 2024, when the main election will be held.

“We expect the OSP to take immediate and decisive steps to not only prevent MS. LYDIA SEYRAM ALHASSAN from repeating the unlawful behaviour but also to bring her and all her accomplices to book.”
