The Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya and Minister of State-designate for Procurement, Sarah Adwoa Safo has promised to streamline government's procurement practices to ensure value for money for the state.

Ghanaians have had cause to complain about some of the procurement practices of governments in the past, with the immediate past administration of John Mahama being heavily criticised for its consistent use of sole sourcing for its procurement needs.

But according to Ms. Safo, unlike the previous government, she would ensure that the Akufo-Addo government used sole-sourcing sparingly.

"We will only advise that sole-sourcing be done if the conditions are met. It's an exception to the rule, rather than being the rule", he said.

Addressing Parliament's Appointment Committee during her vetting on Monday, the Dome Kwabenya MP who is also the Deputy Majority Leader of the House, stated that with the many reforms which have been undertaken in the public financial administration system, it was important to ensure transparency, fairness and integrity in the country's procurement process for the reforms to yield the intended results.

"We need to place emphasis on the procurement process to prevent our money from going down the drain", she stated.

Having obtained a Masters Degree from the George Washington University in Procurement Management, she promised to bring her expertise to bear on the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) to ensure it fulfils it mandate.

"I will empower the Procurement Authority in overseeing the procurement process and advise the government on procurement and make sure that we follow the procedure", she said.
