The new Mayor of Accra, has assured executives of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) of his unflinching support in their work to develop and promote the sport in the country.
Adjin Sowah who also serves as the Greater Accra President of the Ghana Swimming Association, gave the assurance when executives of the GBF, the body responsible for amateur boxing in this country, paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Accra on Monday.
Led by acting President, George Lamptey, the GBF used the occasion to formally welcome the new chief of the capital city to office and to outline proposals for a collaboration with the AMA to host the African boxing championship as early as next year.
Mr Sowah indicated the visit was a “step in the right direction because boxing is not just a sport but the main job we do here in Accra so as AMA we must embrace it.I can assure you of my 100% support in all your activities going forward".
"I've already held talks with managers of the Bukom Boxing Arena who have asked me to be an ambassador of the facility and we have agreed to soon establish a centre there to be certified for training not just the boxers but coaches, referees, managers and all other technical officials within the sport," the Accra Mayor added.
The Mayor said the AMA hopes to “upgrade not just the boxers but the technical and management aspect of the sport. There should be a professional way of managing boxers, once the person has shown potential there should be a formal contract and proper running of his career".
