Penalties were needed for Manchester City to defend the Carabao Cup after a barren stalemate in both regular time and extra time as Pep Guardiola bagged the first Cup of the season with a 4-3 win on spot-kicks over Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.
There was drama towards the end of extra time as Kepa Arizzabalaga overruled his own manager to stay on the pitch with Sarri wanting to introduce Willy Caballero with the game headed to penalties.Â
Opening exchanges
Manchester City were looking to defend their crown after handing Arsenal a 3-0 thrashing in the final last season while Chelsea were out to win their first League Cup since the 2015 season. Chelsea had a conservative start to the game with memories of the 6-0 defeat still lingering in their heads.
Aguero chance
Chances were few and far between the two sides in the first half as the best effort came from Aguero in the 28th minute when a shot on target from the Argentine, who linked with David Silva before firing one from 20 yards, which was slightly deflected, as Kepa dived onto it.Â
Kante chance
Chelsea who were aiming to catch Manchester City on the counter finally had their first real opening of the game in the 66th minute when Hazard made another of those runs into space down the left, as he beat Kompany with an ease and got to the byline to lays back the ball to the rushing Kante but his effort from 12 yards out sails wide over the crossbar.
Willian chance
Willian had a golden opportunity to win the tie for Chelsea right into the depth of the game when he whipped in a free kick under the bar, but Ederson parried it behind for a corner as both sides went straight into extra time after the barren draw.
City chance
The first half of extra was no different from the game as both sides struggled to carve out clear cut chances. Three minutes into the start of the second half City went close when Sterling zoomed electrically to the line, right next to the posts, and squared the ball for Aguero to tap in but Azpilicueta defends brilliantly, getting enough of a touch to divert the ball onto Kepa rather than into the net.Â
Kepa drama
There was drama two minutes into the final whistle of the extra time as Maurizio Sarri wanted to throw on Willy Caballero on but Kepa Arizzabalaga overruled his own manager to stay on the pitch. Nothing could separate both sides even after extra time as they headed into penalties.
Penalties
Jorginho missed the first spot-kick while David Luiz also failed his spot kick. Leroy Sane was the only one to miss Manchester City's spot-kick as they ran away with a 4-3 win on penalties.Â
