The National Council of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has appointed the incumbent Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, as leader of the Minority of the NPP Caucus in the Ninth Parliament, starting from January 7, 2025.

The council has also made some appointments in the party’s caucus in Parliament.

They are the current Deputy Majority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, who has been maintained as Deputy Leader of the caucus, and the current Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, who has also been maintained.

The party also appointed the incumbent First Deputy Majority Whip, Habib Iddrisu, as the First Deputy Minority Whip, and the MP for Mpraeso, Davis Opoku, as the Second Deputy Minority Whip.

The NPP’s new leadership faces challenges following a significant electoral setback in the 2024 general elections.

The party lost over 50 seats, securing just 81 seats in the 9th Parliament, a sharp decline from the 137 seats it held in the 8th Parliament. In contrast, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged as the dominant party, securing over 180 seats, thus becoming the majority in the 9th Parliament.

As the NPP navigates this shift in power dynamics, its leadership will play a critical role in managing opposition strategies and influencing legislative priorities in the new Parliament.
