Ghana's Olympic soccer team, the Black Meteors, today whitewashed their Togolese counterparts 5-1 in the first leg of the African U-23 Championship qualifier at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi.

To qualify for the age-restricted competition, participating nations have to overcome two-legged qualifying stages.

Hattrick from Spain-based forward, Kwabena Owusu, and a goal each from Nassam Yakubu and Osman Bukari ensured a comfortable win for Ibrahim Tanko and his charges.

The first department of the game was balanced as the Klidje Thibault cancelled Kwabena Owusu's opener for Ghana.

On the 27th minutes, Togolese goalkeeper Abdoul-Moubarak Aigba pulled a fantastic save to deny Joel Fameyeh from the spot.

In the second half, the Black Meteors mounted pressure on the Sparrow Hawks to grab the victory.

The result gives Black Meteors a huge advantage ahead of the second leg in Lome on Saturday.

Ghana have failed to participate in the new Olympic Games qualifying tournaments since its inception in 2011.

The winner of both legs will face Gabon in the penultimate round of the qualifiers in March next year while the third and final round to determine the seven nations to join hosts Eqypt at the quadrennial competition is planned for June.
