CSKA Moscow shocked already-qualified Real Madrid, beating the Champions League holders 3-0 at Santiago Bernabeu, but crashed out of Europe completely after Viktoria Plzen's victory over Roma.

The Red-blues scored two quick goals before halftime through Fedor Chalov and Georgi Schennikov before Arnór Sigurðsson added the third in the second half.

CSKA Moscow got off to a positive start as Vlasic drove into the Real Madrid area. He got to the byline and cut a great ball back but Fernandes could only bundle the ball into touch. The home side responded through Asensio, who drove away from two in midfield before unleashing a shot which Akinfeev saved at full stretch.

OFF THE BAR

Madrid hit CSKA on the counter after the visitors’ first spell of pressure. Vinicius Jr picked up the ball on the left and lashed a shot across the face of goal. Asensio the recycled play and curled a fine effort that clipped the top of the CSKA bar.

CHANCES

After like 30 minutes, Madrid started to build pressure on Moscow as Asensio lined up another curling effort which had to be tipped by Akinfeev. Benzema peeled away to the back post to meet the in-swinging corner but his low drive towards the goal was brilliantly blocked by Becao.

Asensio had another brilliant moment. The Spaniard drove towards CSKA area and played a great one-two with Benzema to open up a sight of goal. He got a shot away but it was straight at Akinfeev, who saved with ease.

QUICKFIRE GOALS

Moscow finally took the lead in the 37th minute through Fedor Chalov. Madrid got exposed at the back as Sigurdsson drove into the area. He offloaded the ball to Chalov, who cut back inside the desperate last-gasp challenges of Madrid defense before caressing a brilliant strike into the far corner beyond Courtois.

Just after five minutes, CSKA were in dreamland at the Bernabeu as Georgi Schennikov double their lead. The Madrid defence is all at sea as Fernandes played a one-two with Chalov to get in behind. Courtois saved the full-back’s low shot but Schennikov arrived on cue and scuffed the rebound into the far corner.

INJURY CONCERN

There was a cause for concern for Madrid as Gareth Bale went down clutching his right ankle after appearing to go over on it. Madrid medical staff came on the field to treat the Welshman whose game appeared to be over.

THIRD GOAL

CSKA made it three on what was surely the greatest Champions League night in the club’s history. Madrid was exposed at the back yet again as Arnor Sigurdson gathered on the edge of the area before sweeping a fine third beyond Courtois.
