The University of Ghana, has launched a Sports Fund(UG-SF) to aid the development of sporting facilities on campus.

The initiative forms part of efforts to motivate, support and facilitate admitted athletes and also attract potential sportsmen and women to the university.

According to the Head of the Sports Directorate at the University, Dr. Bello Bella Bitugu, the move was to replicate what existed in other universities including the Cape Coast and University of Education Winneba.

He added that, most foreign Universities in the United States and Europe have such funds for sport men and women.

"This would help attract a lot of good and needy sportsmen and women to the University as the fund would help to support them,"he stated.

The creation of the Sports Fund he said, would ensure a certain degree of resources are made available for the development, maintenance and refurbishment of sports facilities and infrastructure.

He called on the public to support the fund which would go a long way to develop sports in the country.

Launching the fund, Vice Chancellor of UG, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu said the university needed the Fund to promote the growth and development of sports.

He added that, he would be failing the University if he does not develop sports to the highest level.

He urged students to take advantage of the opportunities available to become successful sportsmen alongside achieving academic laurels.

Adidas representative in Ghana, Rex Brobbey is  the Ambassador for the fund with Chief Executive Officer of McDan Group of Companies, Daniel McKorley being an honorary Patron.

President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantekyi was named as the Football Patron, with Yaw Sakyi as the Basketball Patron.
