Imminent Asante Kotoko opponent in the CAF Confederations Cup, Kariobangi Sharks beat Gor Mahia 1:0 to lift the 2018/19 Kenyan Premier League Super Cup.Â
Both teams wasted a number of good goal scoring chances in the first half and the match only sprung to life after the breather. Gor Mahia introduced Nicholas Kipkirui for Francis Mustapha and Ephrem Guikan came in for Bernard Ondiek.
However, it is Sharks who found the back of the net, and it was in style. Nixon Omondi made a good run on the left flank and cut back the ball to the onrushing Sidney Lokale in the box. The youngster cleverly left Philemon Omondi and Joash Onyango for dead and slotted the ball past Boniface Oluoch in the 52nd minute.
The goal seemed to have awakened Gor Mahia as they immediately launched an attack and Sharks custodian Brian Bwire pulled an acrobatic save to deny Joash Onyango from close range in the 54th minute.
Both teams made a raft of changes as the match progressed. Erisa Sseikasambu missed a glorious opportunity to level matters for Gor Mahia in two minutes to stoppage time and Sharks held on to win the KPL Super Cup for the first time in history.Â
Sharks beat Arta Solar 7 from Djibouti 6-1 in Nairobi last week and will travel to Djibouti for the return leg set for Wednesday 5th December.
Kotoko will be facing the Kenyan side if they contain Arta Solar in the return leg. Kotoko sailed to the first round without breaking a sweat after Cameroonian opponent submitted their papers late.
