South Sudan’s former first vice president Riek Machar is in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, for medical treatment, the Sudanese government has confirmed.

Government spokesman Ahmed Bilal Osman has issued a statement confirming that Sudan had received Machar and had notified South Sudan regarding this.

He said his country had received Machar on “purely humanitarian reasons top of which his need for urgent medical attention.”

Machar fled the South Sudanese capital, Juba, with his troops following the five-day fighting that killed close to 300 people and forced thousands others to flee to neighbouring countries.

President Salva Kiir later sacked him as first vice president and replaced him with Taban Deng Gai, a move that received international criticism.

Machar was reported to have gone to the Democratic Republic of Congo last week.

The Sudanese statement said that Machar is stable but will remain under medical in the country until he decides to seek more medical treatment elsewhere reports cctv-africa.com.
