1,500 workers at the mining firm, Goldfields, are likely to lose their jobs this month due to a change in the module of the firm's business activities.

The workers who are unhappy about the move are threatening a showdown with management in the coming days.

Sources reveal that the termination letters of the laid-off workers will be served to them on December 13, 2017 while others will be retained on contract basis.

Meanwhile, the Head of Communication at Goldfields, David Johnson, has justified the move saying, “We have come to a point in our operations where we need to make a strategic decision which is the preferred business module to work with”.

He further explained that the reason for laying off some workers is because the firm's business module has been changed from owner mining to contract mining.
Mr. Johnson disclosed that Goldfields will ensure the affected workers are compensated.

“Over 80% of the workforce will be absolved by the contractor… as per the collective bargaining agreement there is a package that has already been decided and signed off. And it has already been arranged,” he stated.

Goldfields Ghana is currently the largest gold producer in the country with its two operating mines at Damang and Tarkwa.
