A brutal attack on a vehicle transporting cash to a bank on Monday, June 14, 2021, by armed robbers has renewed fears of insecurity in Ghana.
The broad daylight robbery incident resulted in the death of a policeman, Lance Corporal Emmanuel Osei, who was providing police escort and another woman said to have witnessed the incident firsthand.
The driver of the vehicle also sustained severe wounds and is currently receiving treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
Yesterday’s incident is just one of the many attacks that security experts a section of Ghanaians commenting on social media say point to a growing incidence of crime and insecurity since the start of this year.
In many of these incidents, the police have not brought the perpetrators to book.

- Armed robbers attack ambulance transporting a woman in labour (Thursday, February 4, 2021)
Armed robbers attacked an ambulance that was transporting a pregnant woman in labour in the Eastern Region.
The attack killed the driver of the ambulance two days later because one of the bullets fired hit his head.
- Three injured as gunmen attack church during all-night service in Kumasi (Saturday, February 6, 2021)
Three persons sustained severe injuries after a gang of armed robbers attacked members of the Action Prayer Ministry during an all-night prayer service at about 2 am on Saturday, February 6, 2021.
- Police do gun battle with robbery gang at Haatso (Monday, February 8, 2021)
The Accra Regional Police Command on Monday, February 8, 2021, engaged in a gun battle with four armed robbers at Haatso, in Accra, killing one of them in the process. They arrested two while the robbers bolted. Those arrested are Christian Anagbra,38 years; and Emmanuel Gavor, 53.
- Robbery syndicate block Chiana-Sandema road to rob traders (Friday, February 12, 2021)
A robbery syndicate based in Chiana in the Upper East Region struck again on Friday, February 12, 2021. They blocked a section of the Chiana-Sandema road and robbed travellers.
- Police gun down armed robber in escape attempt (February 13, 2021)
The police in Tema shot dead a robbery suspect in their custody, who attempted escaping while touring his weapon lairs with the law officers. Joseph Mensah, popularly known as ‘Sharp’, was arrested on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, during investigations regarding a highway robbery involving. The robbers attacked a Sprinter bus with 15 workers of B5 Metals Company on board, on 14 December 2020.
- Dawn robbery attack near Katiu leaves one dead (Saturday, February 13, 2021)
An early morning robbery attack on the Katiu-Sandema road in the Upper West Region on Saturday, February 13, 2021, led to the death of a livestock trader.
- One injured as robbers attack credit union (Wednesday, 17 February 2021)
Eight armed robbers stormed a credit union office, shot and injured one person and made away with an undisclosed sum of cash. The incident in the evening at Jeninso Akataniese in the Amensie West District of the Ashanti Region.
- Notorious robbers attack Catholic Priest, others in Kade (Friday, February 19, 2021)
A Catholic priest and seven others were attacked by armed robbers in two separate incidents at Asuom in the Eastern Region on that Friday.
- A gang of ten rob bullion van at Fomena (February 21, 2021)
A ten-member gang robbed a bullion van at Fomena in the Ashanti Region, leading to the death of one Sergeant Martin Baba, who was stationed at the Dunkwa District Command. Police arrested five suspects and five reportedly bolted.
- Burglars break into MP’s home, steal perfumes (March 25, 2021)
Suspected burglars broke into the residence of the Member of Parliament of Gomoa East, Desmond De-Graft Kwasi Paitoo, on March 25, 2021. The MP said he woke up this morning only to discover that the burglars had entered his residence.
- Over GH¢240k robbed from Mobile Money vendor in Rambo style (Wednesday, April 21)
Four suspected armed robbers on Wednesday, April 21 robbed a Mobile Money vendor at Bantama in the Ashanti Region at gun point and made away with over GH¢240,000. The four robbers wore masks and were wielding pistols.
