The High Court in Accra has directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to proceed with the collation and declaration of results of Ablekuma North and Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Obuasi East, Ahafo Ano North, Tema Central, and Dome Kwabenya constituencies.
Presided over by Justice Rev. Joseph Adu-Owusu Agyeman, the Court also instructed the Inspector General of Police to ensure adequate security for the EC at all collation centres to facilitate a smooth process.
Chair of the EC, Jean Mensa at a press conference on Thursday, December 19 said that the commission would not uphold the declaration of parliamentary results in nine constituencies because they were done under duress.
These include Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Ahafo Ano South, Ahafo Ano North, Obuasi East, Okaikwei Central, Ablekuma North, Tema Central, Techiman South, and Dome-Kwabenya.
“The declarations made by our staff were made under threats and we consider them illegal, We will not uphold results made under threats, duress,” she said.
She further called on the outgoing President, Akufo-Addo and the incoming President John Dramani Mahama to provide security to officials of the commission to enable them to fully complete their work in the 2024 general elections.
“We call on Akufo-Addo, John Mahama to intervene in this matter and provide the commission with adequate security,” Jean Mensa added.
Earlier, on December 13, the EC announced the suspension of the re-collation of results at the Tesano Police Depot.
The EC cited security concerns and procedural irregularities as reasons for the halt.
