Two people have been killed, and several others injured in renewed violence in Bawku following a chieftaincy-related clash.

The renewed clashes according to details available escalated after the return of a rival chief to the area.

After his arrest order was revoked by a Kumasi High Court on October 17, 2024, Alhaji Seidu Abagre, who had been living in exile since his installation in Nalerigu in February 2023, returned to Bawku.

His reappearance is alleged to have revived tensions between the two groups, resulting in gunfire exchanges on Saturday night, October 26.

The incident resulted in the death of two people and harm to others.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces have assured the public of their commitment to restoring peace and stability in Bawku, its surrounding areas, and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway.

In a press release issued on Sunday, the security agencies stated that joint Police and Military teams have been deployed across these areas to manage the tense security situation and ensure public safety.

According to the statement, a concentrated security presence in Bawku and its environs is being bolstered by additional joint forces along the major highway from Bolgatanga to Tamale.

The deployment on this route aims to not only maintain security but also streamline vehicular movement and control traffic flow in the region.

The police and military reiterated their commitment to preserving peace, law, and order, reassuring residents and travellers that ongoing efforts are designed to protect lives and property.

“The Ghana Police Service and Ghana Armed Forces remain dedicated to maintaining peace and security in Bawku and its surroundings,” the statement noted.
