The Director General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Dr John Ofori-Tenkorang says the highest pension earner in Ghana takes home about GH¢51,000 every month.
Dr John Ofori-Tenkorang on Thursday November 29, 2018 in a meeting with a cross-section of journalists in Accra disclosed this.
He was responding to a question on pension discrepancies vis-Ã -vis salaries earned during active service.
Dr Ofori-Tenkorang indicated that the pension paid monthly is regulated by an act of Parliament, which also determines the end-of-service earnings for contributors.
“I as DG cannot change what is legitimately due [a pensioner] arbitrarily.â€
He, therefore, cited that the highest earner in their records currently takes home GH¢51,000 every month.
"He contributed for so long so he earned the full pension right,â€
“[But] that is on the extreme,†he stated, nonetheless.
The SSNIT Director General revealed that some are supposed to earn as low as GH¢100 but, again, the legislation does not allow those persons to be given that simply because the lowest pension is pegged with the minimum wage.
“So you get what you put in, in a senseâ€.
