Serious developments are ongoing at the catchment areas of the Weija Dam despite the warnings to residents stay away from these areas, the Ghana Water Company Limited GWCL, has revealed.

The GWCL said they have a drone view of the catchment areas of the Weija Dam and the level of developments that are going currently supersedes what has been completed.

The Communications Manager of the GWCL, Stanley Martey, who revealed this in an interview with PrimeNewsGhana on the spillage of the Dam which is causing havoc in the area explained that, even though they work with the Ga South District Assembly, they are shocked permits are given to people to develop close to the danger zones of the Dam.

Currently, areas such as Tetegu and Weija and their environs have flooded due to the spillage of the excess water from the Weija Dam.

Mr Martey said “some are even building as we speak. I have a drone view of the area and it’s pathetic”.

“We work with the District Assembly but people are building at the unauthorized areas”, he explained.

The Communications Manager said even though the GWCL is yet to open all the six spillways to allow the massive flow of water out of the Dam, the company do not want to take chances as lives may be lost if all the spillways should be open.

He said “no casualty has been recorded since May that we started spilling water but we don’t know what the future holds. We don’t know what will happen in the next minute or two”.

“We are dredging the estuary so that the water can enter into the sea but we need to be proactive and that is what we are doing”, he explained.

Mr Martey warned that “people should vacate because now we are getting more inflows and we should have open all the six spillways so we are cautioning them to vacate because if it collapses, the repercussions will be more disastrous than the spillage”.
