The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has announced increase in electricity and water tariffs, which takes effect from October 1, 2019.

Electricity has gone up by 5.94 % and water has also gone up by 2.22 %.

In a statement signed by Mrs Mami Dufie Ofori the Executive Secretary of PURC, it said "This is part of 4Q review and tariff adjustment. The automatic adjustment formula was applied and that is a tariff mechanism that seeks to track and incorporate movement in key determining factors to reflect the real cost of electricity and water quarterly. The factors considered included the cedi-dollar exchange rate, price of crude oil and natural gas, fuel price, fuel mix, generation mix, power purchase, demand forecast electricity cost as well.
The commission, however, wishes to reiterate its commitment to embark on effective tariff monitoring programme in providing the end-user improved quality of services".

The PURC last increased the electricity tariff on July 1, 2019, and these new tariffs start on October 1, 2019.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) was set up as a multi-sectorial regulator by Government of Ghana in October 1997 under the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission Act, 1997 (Act 538) as part of the utility sector reform process to regulate the provision of utility services in the electricity and water sectors.
