Government has, through a public-private partnership, built a 2,000 capacity hostel facility for female load carriers (Kayayei) in the Ashanti Region.
The 2,000-capacity hostel facility at Sepe-Buokrom has a Creche and a Reform and Skill Training Centre.
The facility was inaugurated by Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba, who, over the weekend visited the area to interact with the Kayayei on their welfare and also inspected.
The Minister also had a meeting with the leaders of the Kayayei in the region.
The meeting was to brief the leaders about government’s commitment to ending the plight of Kayayei in the next five years.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by President Akufo-Addo, pledged during the 2016 elections to provide hostel facilities for Kayayei who sleep on the streets at the mercy of the weather.
The leaders of the Kayayei, who also inspected the hostel facility, pledged their full support to the government toward ending the Kayayei phenomenon.
