The training of Nurse Assistant Clinical(NAC) and Nurse Assistant Preventive programmes will be suspended in all institutions effective 2019/2020 academic year.

The decision to suspend the programmes follows a consultation between the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, Christian Health Association of Ghana, Teaching Hospitals and other stakeholders aimed at strengthening the degree and diploma awarding programmes in Nursing and Midwifery.

A directive signed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council has since advised various heads and principals of nursing and midwifery training institutions to plan towards the folding up of those programmes.

According to the Registrar of the council, Felix Nyante, statistics show that there are adequate numbers of NAC/NAP Practitioners for the health sector.

This, according to the directive was affirmed during a human resource forum held by the MoH this year at Koforidua to review the country’s human resource needs for the various cadre of nurses and midwives in the country among others.

“It was in this regard that the quotas for admissions of these programmes have been reducing since the last academic year,” he added.
