Inspector General of Police, IGP, David Asante-Apeatu has confirmed the use of WhatsApp text as a medium to send directives to personnel of the Ghana Police Service.
Taking his turn at the Ayawaso Commission of Inquiry on Tuesday, March 5, IGP David Asante-Apeatu said it is normal for police personnel to send directives to other servicemen with WhatsApp text.
Accra Regional Police Operations Commander, Chief Superintendent Kwesi Ofori last week told the Ayawaso commission the Police Service now use WhatsApp and Text messages to send operational directives to its personnel.
Supt. Ofori said messages were sent to all divisional commanders prior to the Ayawaso by-election to perform certain functions on the day.
"In contemporary terms, WhatsApp and other messages are becoming part of our system. I can say that for the Accra Region, the first thing is to visit our Accra Region WhatsApp group"
"We have someone who monitors and handles the messages on our Accra Region messaging platforms. I don't know if they can be deleted but the messages from last year are still intact"
Responding to a question in relation to the WhatsApp revelation which some individuals believe it is inappropriate, The IGP said the action in the police service is normal.
The IGP last month called on Political parties to disband political vigilante groups, speaking on the same issue of vigilantism at the Ayawaso Commission, he said: "There have been many cases of these vigilante attacks, either within the parties or between the parties. It's difficult to process these cases especially when it happens within the parties".
